NOW!!!!! It’s official—Cambridge City FC has a new home, and 1,459 passionate fans were there to witness history in the making at the FWD-IP Community Stadium. After 11 long years, the Lilywhites finally played their first match on home turf, welcoming Tilbury FC in a day that will go down as one of the most memorable in the club’s history.
The wait was worth it, as excitement rippled through Sawston and beyond. Tickets were snapped up from the moment the game was announced, with 1,265 bought in advance, and plenty of walk-ins and season ticket holders adding to the atmosphere. It was fantastic to see new faces from Sawston standing shoulder to shoulder with the loyal supporters who have kept the faith through the club’s ups and downs.
Adding to the carnival vibe, Lily the Panda got the crowd going with her dance moves and pre-match antics. The irresistible smell of burgers sizzling on the grills from JB Catering and Grill Plug filled the air, while Brewboard kept fans refreshed and Herbie’s Bakes delivered indulgent treats to sweeten the occasion.
As kickoff approached, anticipation hit fever pitch. The teams entered the pitch to deafening applause and the sound of “We Built This City” blasting through the tannoy—a fitting anthem for the day.
The first half was a tight contest, but just before the break, the Lilywhites struck gold. A well-placed corner found its way to Shane Temple, who turned brilliantly in the box and slotted home the opening goal to an eruption of cheers across the stands.
The second half saw Tilbury come out strong, pushing the pace and creating pressure. City came agonisingly close to doubling their lead when Temple’s delicate lob hit the post, but it wasn’t to be. Moments later, a penalty awarded to Tilbury brought the visitors level, and a late goal sealed the match for the Dockers.
Despite the final scoreline, the day was a resounding success. Fans, sponsors, and volunteers alike heaped praise on the organisation and atmosphere. From matchday sponsor ISL Refrigeration to the countless helpers behind the scenes, everyone played their part in creating a day to remember.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to the people of Sawston for turning up in droves and embracing their new hometown club. This is just the beginning of Cambridge City FC’s next chapter, and we couldn’t be more excited to have you all on this journey with us. Together, we’ll build something extraordinary as we climb back up the non-league pyramid.
The next match is just 3 days away, when we welcome Waltham Abbey to the FWD-IP Community Stadium. In a close match earlier in the season City grabbed a last minute winner in an exciting game. Let's hope for more of the same.
