On Thursday 15th August our U18s played Stowmarket’s U18s in the extra preliminary round of the FA Youth Cup. The match was away at Stowmarket’s ground for a 7:45pm kick-off and saw an attendance of 55 spectators.
In the first half Cambridge were on top and took an early lead through Ed Tassell from a corner kick. Following this City had various chances but none hit the back of the net. Shortly after the game had restarted after half time City went 2-0 up through another Ed Tassell goal, once again from a corner. For the next 20 minutes the teams were in a stalemate until one of the Stowmarket players broke through the defence and went round the keeper and made it 2-1. That's how the match ended and City were through to the next round of the cup.
Director of Youth, Neil Midgley, commented:
‘I was extremely pleased with the players' attitude to the game, they competed well and took on instructions. First half I thought we dominated and should have gone more than one goal up. Fair play to Stowmarket, they came out in the second half and gave it a good go but once we scored the second the tie was over. A very good start to the season, plenty of work to do at training tonight ready for the next game away at Saffron Walden on Thursday 22nd August.’
Overall, this was a great result for the Cambridge City youth side and all of us at the club are hoping that they can have a lengthy run in the FA Youth Cup - their next opponent is yet to be announced.
